Fringe Season 2 Episode 23: Over There: Part 2

Walternate is informed of the original Walter’s presence in hospital, but William Bell and Olivia manage to rescue him first. Walternate lies to Peter about the machine’s real purpose, claiming that it can help heal the other world. Alter-Olivia and Alter-Charlie are unable to capture Walter, but Alter-Olivia sees a surveillance shot of Olivia and Walter and goes to confront Walternate. Peter meets Alter-Olivia who drives him to his new apartment. Walter and Bell go to Harvard to collect equipment needed to return home and Walter reveals his intense dislike for him, considering him a selfish war profiteer while he was locked away for 17 years and is still broken inside. Bell reveals the alternate universe equivalent of himself died in a car accident as a young man. Olivia confronts Alter-Olivia who recognizes that Olivia has feelings for Peter. After a fight Olivia knocks Alter-Olivia unconcious and poses as her. Peter discovers the machine is symbiotic and needs a particular human to control it: him. Olivia and an oblivious Alter-Charlie go to collect Peter to move him for his own safety. Olivia knocks out Charlie and reveals herself to Peter, as well as filling him in on the machine’s real purpose and Walternate’s intentions. Peter states he doesn’t belong in the other world or Olivia’s world. Olivia reveals her feelings for Peter, making him decide to leave together. They race to meet up with Walter and Bell at the Opera House, but Alter-Olivia and a team of Fringe Commandos catch up with them there. Bell and Olivia hold off the assault while Peter and Walter set up the dimensional device to return home. Without a fuel source to power the device, Bell sacrifices himself to create a nuclear reaction using his body’s unstable molecular state. Before dying he reveals that he took Walter’s memories away at Walter’s own request, with Walter telling him that he was wrong about him and forgives him. Olivia, Walter, and Peter return home successfully. Peter tells Walter he’ll never understand him, but Walter travelled into another universe twice to save him, which counts for something, so Peter forgives him. Olivia goes to the typewriter communication station to await orders and is revealed to be Alter-Olivia infiltrating our side. The Olivia from our world is seen in a military detention center on the other side. Walternate visits her, cruelly stares at her without speaking then leaves her in the dark isolation of solitary confinement.

Fringe Season 2 Episode 18: White Tulip

Passengers aboard a commuter train suddenly die, and the Fringe division discovers that all electrical equipment, as well as the bodies themselves, have been drained of power. While Walter prepares to reveal the truth to Peter, the team eventually discover that a man was last seen leaving the train during the time of the incident and pursue this lead. Following the man’s movements through surveillance cameras throughout the city, the Fringe division discovers his identity: Alistair Peck, an astrophysics professor teaching at MIT. When the division and police raid his house, Peck returns home and they hold him at gunpoint. Walter finds out that Peck experimented on his body to convert himself into a living temporal pocket. Before they can stop him, Peck escapes and returns to the moment in the train, revealing himself to be able to use his body to time travel. Learning from his mistakes, Peck makes more modifications to himself, becoming more of an abomination. Walter discovers that Peck’s time travel caused the people in the train to die and theorizes that the professor may have experienced several loops, while Olivia understands why Peck is time-travelling; in order to save his fiancée from a car crash years ago. The division finds that Peck is hiding in MIT to perfect his work. Walter volunteers to go inside before the authorities move in and dissuade Peck from continuing his quest. Walter warns Peck that the energy he uses in time-travelling back further into the past would cause more deaths to occur but the professor is convinced no collateral damage would be done. Walter tells Peck about the truth of what he did that caused disastrous consequences, but Peck escapes when the SWAT forces arrive to take him down. Peck returns hours into the past and writes a letter before he returns further back into the past just before his fiancée died. He manages to reunite with her moments before they are both killed in the car crash. With the time-travel incident never happened before, Walter writes a letter to Peter telling him of his origin, similar to the beginning of the episode. However, after finishing it, he burns it. He later receives the letter Peck wrote him, revealing to be just a hand-drawn picture of a white tulip, telling him to forgive himself.

Fringe Season 2 Episode 16: Peter

While explaining Peter’s other-worldly beginnings to Olivia, Walter flashes back to 1985. During his thirties, Walter explained the concepts of alternate dimensions to military officials and retrieved information of technological value. Walter spent his time observing his other self through a special machine that looked through dimensions, where the other self worked on a cure for Peter’s genetic disorder, which is gradually worsening. One day, Walter is told by his wife Elizabeth to come home and see Peter, with father and son sharing a conversation before Peter passed away. After Peter’s funeral, Walter witnesses his other self almost succeeding in creating a cure for his alternate son’s illness and sees the Observer September arriving to witness the important moment. Later, the Observers meet up to discuss September’s revealed existence to the alternate Walter and plan to fix things. With his other self giving up in making his cure, Walter continues where his other self left off. In order to test his own version of his cure, Walter planned to take the other Peter over to his world. Carla, Walter’s assistant, approaches Nina Sharp for help in stopping Walter from doing what could be a disastrous decision to travel to the alternate world. Walter sets up his dimension-travelling apparatus on Lake Reiden, while Nina and Carla attempt to stop him. Walter and Nina struggle and Walter travels over the other side, losing his cure in the process, while Nina loses her right arm from the closing portal. Without his cure, Walter goes to fetch the alternate Peter and travel back. Upon arriving back at his world, Walter and the alternate Peter drop through the ice in the lake. September arrives and rescues both of them from drowning, and later explains that Peter is important. Walter uses the cure on the alternate Peter and cures him of his illness. Although Walter intended to bring the alternate Peter back to his alternate dimension, he drops the idea when Elizabeth is not willing to let Peter go.

Fringe Season 2 Episode 15: Jacksonville

When a building in Manhattan is destroyed in a bizarre earthquake that transports another building literally inside of it, Walter concludes that to correct the unbalance created by the incident, another random building in Manhattan will vanish, killing everyone inside. To identify which building it will be, the team travels to Jacksonville, Florida, to the site of Olivia’s childhood drug trials. (Which she has no recollection of.) By conducting experiments similar to those experienced while she was a child, Olivia gains the ability to identify objects and energies originating from the other side. After using this ability to identify the building that is set to vanish, Olivia evacuates it moments before it disappears. Afterwards, in the midst of a budding romance with her colleague Peter, Olivia sees the same energy radiate from him, and realizes that he is from the “other side.”
